Who's looking forward to the May long weekend!?
We sure are! The long weekend that starts May 18th and runs through May 21st is not only is it a celebration of the return of the warm weather, it’s a chance to relax and have some fun with neighbours.
The only problem is Calgary has so many exciting events going on, it will be hard to see and do everything you want to.

Get Lost in a Secret Garden
If you treasure the classic book by Frances Hodgson Burnett, then you’ll love seeing The Secret Garden come to life on stage in the Max Bell Theatre. There is one evening showing on Friday, May 18th, as well as a matinee and evening show on Saturday the 19th. Imaginatively transformed into a musical production, this will be a magical production the whole family can enjoy!
Picnic in Bowness Park
Spend some of your long weekend enjoying the breath-taking natural scenery of Calgary. Bowness Park has walking paths, a lagoon, a playground and more. Take along a lunch and enjoy the sights from a bench in the picnic area.
Hit Up Heritage Park
The grand opening of Heritage Park happens over the long weekend. The history of Canada comes alive for families as they tour the village by wagon or train. Parents and kids can enjoy the rides on the Antique midway, visit the Gasoline Alley Museum, then stop for a delicious bite to eat in the Selkirk Grille. Don’t forget to pick up a keepsake from one of the quaint shops at Haskayne Mercantile Block.
Don't Pass on Pandas
Spend a lovely day at the Calgary Zoo to admire all the giraffes, penguins, tigers, gorillas, lemurs, and other animals in their vast collection. After touring the exhibits, take a ride on the zoo’s mini express train and hop onto the Wildlife Carousel. Don’t forget to stop for a meal in Penguin café!
On May 7th, a new panda bear exhibit will open at the zoo. Visit Er Shun, Dao Mao and their cubs during their stay in Panda Passage. Learn about these beautiful, exotic bears and see them interact right in front of your eyes!
Play Monster Mini Golf (If You Dare!)
It’s mini golf with a twist! Make your way through a glow in the dark mini golf course with characters, music, and plenty of surprises at Monster Mini Golf.
Catch a Movie
Take a break from the exciting activities of the long weekend and see a movie at Landmark Cinemas. Sit back in a leather recliner and enjoy a new release starring your favourite actors. Be sure to take advantage of the convenience of buying your tickets ahead of time online.
Sip Coffee and Cuddle Cats
Imagine choosing from a menu of delectable baked goods and delicious drinks while visiting with a room full of playful felines. If you adore cats and want to spend some quiet time petting and playing with cats who love company, then the Regal Cat Café in Calgary is worth a visit. There is a small fee for a 45-minute visit with the kitties.
See The Whales Tohora Exhibit
Put aside part of your long weekend in Calgary for this interactive exhibit featuring whales at TELUS Spark. This exciting and educational exhibit is visiting from the National Museum of New Zealand. Learn about the eating habits of whales, their anatomy, their methods of communication, and more!
Seek Some Thrills
Calaway Park has its grand opening this season just in time for the long weekend! This Calgary amusement park has rides galore including the Bumper Boats, the Rocky Mountain Railroad, the Samba Spin, and the Ocean Motion for thrill seekers! Try your luck in the game area or sit down on a bench with a frozen lemonade and enjoy the sights and sounds of this amazing amusement park.
Solve a Mystery
Make it a point to pay a visit to Vertigo Theater to indulge in a play featuring Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous character, Sherlock Holmes. The classic detective is hot on the trail to find the missing brother of Annie Oakley in Sherlock Holmes and the American Problem. There is an evening show on Friday, May 18th. On either Saturday the 19th or Sunday the 20th, you can catch a matinee or an evening show.

- Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. Learn about the history of sports in Canada, see sports equipment from the past and try some interactive sports exhibits.
- Fish Creek Provincial Park Take in the sights of this park from the seat of a bicycle on one of the bike paths or enjoy a leisurely hike. Be on the lookout for the rabbits, deer, snakes, coyotes, and dozens of other mammals and birds that make their home in this popular Calgary park.
- The Military Museums. Learn about the military history of Canada. Experience the feel of a First World War trench and explore the wheelhouse of a Second World War ship.
