Valentine's Day always seems to sneak up on us every year. However, you can easily plan a fun date with your sweetie even at the last minute, and even without shopping for stuffed animals or candy. Use a little bit of creativity, and you'll have an exciting day to remember.
1. Cook Dinner Together
This will be the most fun if you both enjoy cooking, but the experience of preparing a favourite meal together can be a blast for newbies, too. Put on your favourite tunes to enjoy, and maybe try a dance or two around the kitchen. Remember that some of the most memorable scenes between movie couples involve dinner and/or dancing.
Don't forget to pick up a bottle of your favourite wine. Picking a selection that pairs nicely with your chosen meal is a nice addition that adds class to the dinner. Consider whipping up a nice dessert to finish your meal off with.
2. Have a Rom Com Marathon
Netflix and other streaming services offer a fun mix of favourites and make it easy for you to discover your own. Don't forget the popcorn or perhaps a big pizza and a nice throw to cuddle up under. Instead of the jumbo pop you'd get at the multiplex, why not make up some cocktails to enjoy?
3. Check Out Calgary's Restaurant & Nightclub Scene
One thing about Calgary you'll want to bear in mind is that boredom never has to be a problem. Why not dress up for a night out and check out some of the restaurants and clubs in the midst of the city? Taking a nice, leisurely stroll after dinner is a great way to finish off your night out.
The Calgary downtown area has a great selection of places where you can try out new selections or find favourite menu items. Because of the city's size and diversity, you can find almost any type of cuisine here. Consider also checking out the nightclub scene for a lot of hot dancing and musical action.
4. Say "I Do" for the First or Second Time
If you haven't yet said "I do", what's a better time than Valentine's Day? Even if you're already married, renewing your vows is a perfect way to celebrate your ongoing devotion to each other. Choose a quaint little chapel with all the trimmings or choose a location and the officiant of your choice for a custom experience.
5. Do a Video Game Marathon
Sure, playing video games might be an unorthodox choice, but if you're both gamers, you're all set. Instead of going for an online multiplayer game, try a choice that allows just the two of you to play together. You might just end up starting a date night tradition that will last.
6. Take a Painting Class/Workshop
Virtually anyone can learn to paint, and this is a fun way to spend time together that is unique and memorable. Using each other as models is a perfect way to inspire your imagination. If it goes well enough, you might decide to make painting classes a regular part of your routine.
7. Go Stargazing
Winter nights are a great time to catch some of your favourite constellations. A telescope or even a good pair of binoculars will increase the number of things you can see very easily. Also, consider keeping an eye out for satellite flybys that allow you to spot the Hubble Space Telescope, International Space Station, and other bright objects.
8. Go Out for Some Skating
One of the best things about living in Calgary is that there is no lack of places to skate. You can try your hand at imitating Canada's top figure skaters or just enjoy being out. Don't forget to finish up with a nice cup of hot chocolate.
9. Pamper Yourself at a Hotel
Your home has a lot of awesome amenities, but there's no reason why you can't treat yourself and your main squeeze to a night away from home. Many of the high-end hotels offer suites that are just perfect for a romantic night away from home. Many also have dining, entertainment, and spa options as extra treats.
Planning Valentine's Day fun at the last minute doesn't have to be stressful or expensive. All you need is a bit of creativity. No matter what your choice, you'll be one your way to having a day or night to remember.
