You’ve tackled the organization of your kitchen, living room and master bedroom. The next item on your to-do list is to organize your walk-in closet, and there are many ways to do this that go beyond simply hanging clothing on a rack.
Discover how to organize your walk-in closet to make it an appealing place to be.
Use Clear Plastic Containers for Your Shoes
Get a collection of clear plastic containers with lids. Put a pair of your shoes in each and place them on the shelves in your closet. This keeps your shoes clean and allows you to see all of your options at a glance!
Get Adjustable Shelves to Make More Space
An adjustable shelf can be moved to allow more or less space between the shelf above or below it. Set up your adjustable shelves with about three inches or so of space in-between. Put folded t-shirts, sweaters, pyjamas, sweatshirts and jeans on these shelves. This arrangement keeps your foldable items organized while clearing a lot more space for other things.
A Collection of Wicker Baskets for Accessories
Four or five small white or brown wicker baskets look nice on the shelves of a walk-in closet. You can put a fabric liner in each of the baskets to make them even more attractive. Use your wicker baskets for your scarves, underwear, socks and other small items.
Add a Clothing Rod or Two
You can utilize space between two shelves of a closet by putting up an adjustable clothing rod or two. Make use of this space by hanging up and organizing more of your pants, shirts and jackets.
Create an Accent Wall
Create an accent wall in your closet! One idea is to put up wallpaper with beautiful roses, hydrangeas or other flowers on it. If you're not a floral fan, find a pattern you do love. Or, you could put up wallpaper/paint in your favourite colour. Having an accent wall means every time you open your walk-in closet you’ll be greeted with a splash of colour and style.
Another idea is to paint your accent wall in a bright pastel colour and put up a print with colours that complement or match the colour of your wall. Or, hang a print with colours that serve as a dramatic contrast to the paint colour on the wall behind it.
Add Fun Accessories to the Space
There’s no rule saying you can’t decorate your walk-in closet like any other room. So, consider putting a comfortable upholstered stool or Parson’s chair in your closet. Other ideas for accessories include a vase of artificial flowers on a plant stand, a piece of colourful artwork and a jewellery stand for necklaces and bracelets.
Install Coat Hooks on One Wall
Items such as hats, scarves, purses and wraps don’t have to take up room on the shelves of your walk-in closet. If you install three or four coat hooks on one wall, you can use them to neatly hang up these items as well as others.
Invest in One Set of Hangers
The types of hangers you have in your closet contribute to the overall look of the space. Put aside your metal and plastic hangers in favour of wooden hangers for all of your clothing items. The uniform look of your clothing racks will make the closet look neat and organized.
If you prefer a more elegant, feminine look, try satin padded clothes hangers. Make sure they are all one colour and/or the same type of print, so you can maintain a balanced look on your clothing racks.
Put Down an Attractive Rug
Consider putting a rug on the floor of your walk-in closet. A rug with a zig-zag or lattice pattern can add vitality to the space. Think about a rug with two or more colours to bring some more brightness to your closet.
Display Your Shoes on Shelves
Yes, another shoe idea! Instead of putting your shoes on the floor, put them up at eye-level by displaying them on the shelves in your walk-in closet. Organizing them by type or colour are excellent ways to make your closet look even more attractive.
Get a Fabric Laundry Hamper
Keep your dirty clothing items off the floor by placing a fabric laundry hamper against one wall of your walk-in closet. A hamper like this contributes to your closet’s décor and serves a practical purpose.
Utilize Portable Drawers
A set of portable drawers in your walk-in closet can hold many items such as scarves, belts, socks and ties. There are many stylish sets of portable drawers made to look like woven material, wicker or wood. In short, you can choose a set of portable drawers that complement the decor of the rest of your closet.
Use Multi-Tier Hangers
These hangers can open up a lot of space in your walk-in closet. Some can support multiple pairs of pants while others are designed to support several blouses. These hangers are effective at using the vertical space in your closet.
These tips can help you create a walk-in closet that’s just as attractive as the rest of the rooms in your home. Try one or all of the ideas we've listed here and don't forget to check out our previous post on keeping your bathroom well organized!
