However, you might spend some time wondering if the upgrades you're considering are worth the effort or money. The best thing about upgrades is they can benefit your home's value in the long run. But how do you know which upgrades are really worth it?

We're here to help – here are some upgrade you won't regret making.

Extra Garage Space

Although not the most glamorous of options, extra garage space is a benefit that can add a lot of value to your home. There are a lot of things you can do with this space besides just having extra storage, although that option does come in handy.

If you like to maintain a small workshop space, the garage is an ideal location that provides easy access in all weather (a pro of attached garages). The extra space makes it easy to provide additional shelving and other storage options.

High Ceilings

There's a good reason vaulted, and other high ceilings enjoy so much popularity among homebuyers. You will have a lot more flexibility with the décor you choose, and will also have more lighting options to keep rooms looking bright and open. Because many prospective buyers actively seek out homes with elevated ceilings, you'll have a greater assurance of the increased resale value.

Additional Electrical Outlets

Most of us have a lot of gadgets we use, making easy access to outlets important. Newer, energy efficient lighting systems require access to decent outlets, as do electronics. Just a few of the ideas worth considering include charging stations in areas where the family gathers, lighting on either side of the bed in the master bedroom, and extra exterior outlets for holiday light displays.

Countertop choices are important not only for their appearance but also for the convenience they offer. Granite and quartz are two of the popular options that add the most character to a kitchen and go well with cabinets of almost any wood colour.

Granite requires little maintenance besides occasional resealing and has the benefit of unique colours due to extra mineral content. Quartz is also a beautiful choice available in several colours and is non-porous, meaning it's very easy to keep clean.

Cabinet and Other Storage Options

The choice of kitchen cabinets makes a major difference in a home's overall appearance. Even though their primary purpose is to maximize your storage space, they can also have a major impact on your kitchen's look. Staggered and extended cabinets are both some of the most common options.

With staggered cabinets, it's easier to arrange attractive glassware at different levels for visual appeal. Another option is the addition of extended cabinets, giving a look of even more space in an already-spacious kitchen area.

In addition to cabinet upgrades, there are some other kitchen features worthy of consideration. Microwave drawers help put needed utensils within easier reach when preparing a bigger meal. If you have kids who are frequently in and out of the kitchen, consider putting your beverage and snack centres under counters to avoid disrupting of your preparation space.

Kitchen islands provide more than additional work space, even though this is one of their primary uses. If you opt to have a big enough island in your home, many of your meals can take place at the island, freeing up your formal dining area for special occasions. Another option is to consider a kitchen nook, ideal if you prefer to give younger kids their own dining space during holiday meals.

Bathroom Lighting

Many people overlook bathroom lighting, believing the main consideration is the tub or shower. However, good lighting is essential for tasks such as shaving, applying makeup, and hair styling.

Wall sconces are good for providing additional lighting without using the overhead or above-sink fixture all the time. If you're getting ready to go out and don't wish to disturb someone in a neighbouring bedroom, you'll find these types of options most helpful. Additional lighting surrounding a makeup mirror is also a good way to make full use of lighting options.

Windows

Many homeowners overlook the increased flexibility they can take advantage of with additional windows. Your builder can include more windows, bigger windows (even spanning floor to ceiling), or full window french doors that lead to a back patio.

You can also get a little more unique with your choices. For example, off the kitchen or living room, you could choose to have a bay window where you can grow herbs and other plants. Upstairs windows in studies or bedrooms are ideal options for window seats. Don't be afraid to embrace your creative side and consider options like stained glass or other decorative glass panels for more colour.

There are likely options for whatever upgrades your heart desires. Talk to your builder about your choices and the value they can bring to your home.
